Founder:
The idea of 1000 Books first started as a way for Melissa to donate a few of her favorite books to her cousins living in rural China. As a kid, Melissa loved reading books as it was a way to transport into a whole new world. She wanted to share these books with her cousins and the rest of the Mongolian community, which previously did not have access to these materials. From there, the support from her community allowed her to collect 1000 Books.

Since then, 1000 Books has expanded to much more. As a SXSW Edu speaker and founder of TeenLink + Tailored, she has used her entrepreneurial presence for good to educate other teens about the importance of entrepreneurship.

Melissa’s note: Thank you so much to everyone who has believed in 1000 Books and the message behind it. I am eternally grateful to anyone who has donated books, money, or their time to spread the word about 1000 Books. I would like to thank the Westbank Library for working with us from the very beginning to make the first hundred book donations possible. I’m proud to say that now we’ve collected over 5,000 books and that number is growing day by day. 1000 Books has grown from me collecting books myself to a team of 20+ passionate people. I’m excited to announce that we are expanding to more areas: USA (August 2018), India (Winter 2018), and Russia (Summer 2019).

I’ve had so much fun along this journey spreading my love teaching English and entrepreneurship. We would not be here without you; as youth, let’s change the world for the better.

MISSION STATEMENT:
#1000Books is a globally run organization that provides English and entrepreneurship resources to people in developing nations through technology, service, and empowerment. For youth, by youth.

TL;DR
1000 Books aims to send 1000 English Books and entrepreneurship resources to rural areas throughout the world. In addition to sending 1000 books, we provide the necessary resources to learn English. We produce an audio curriculum, conduct workshops, hold interactive panels, and train teachers, all impacting over 400 teachers and 35,000 students.

ABOUT:
A record breaking 85% of the global population is literate, but those who are not generally live in rural and low-income communities that are especially hard to reach with effective programs (Reading Village). A record breaking 85% of the global population is literate, but those who are not generally live in rural and low-income communities that are especially hard to reach with effective programs (Reading Village)

1000 Books changes that. By creating a guided audio curriculum and working directly with those who need it most, we impact over 35,000 students.

Founded in 2017 by Melissa Khasbagan, 1000 Books first started out as a project to collect a few English books for her younger cousins. After noticing that both students and teachers did not have access to valuable materials to learn English.  And with the support she received from her community, she decided to found 1000 Books for Mongolia, dedicating to providing books for Mongolian students. We empower people to connect to the world by:

  • Training teachers

  • Creating an audio curriculum

  • Conducting workshops

  • Holding interactive panels

  • Sending books

  • Building libraries
