Founder:
The idea of 1000 Books first started as a way for Melissa to donate a few of her favorite books to her cousins living in rural China. As a kid, Melissa loved reading books as it was a way to transport into a whole new world. She wanted to share these books with her cousins and the rest of the Mongolian community, which previously did not have access to these materials. From there, the support from her community allowed her to collect 1000 Books.
Since then, 1000 Books has expanded to much more. As a SXSW Edu speaker and founder of TeenLink + Tailored, she has used her entrepreneurial presence for good to educate other teens about the importance of entrepreneurship.
Melissa’s note: Thank you so much to everyone who has believed in 1000 Books and the message behind it. I am eternally grateful to anyone who has donated books, money, or their time to spread the word about 1000 Books. I would like to thank the Westbank Library for working with us from the very beginning to make the first hundred book donations possible. I’m proud to say that now we’ve collected over 5,000 books and that number is growing day by day. 1000 Books has grown from me collecting books myself to a team of 20+ passionate people. I’m excited to announce that we are expanding to more areas: USA (August 2018), India (Winter 2018), and Russia (Summer 2019).
I’ve had so much fun along this journey spreading my love teaching English and entrepreneurship. We would not be here without you; as youth, let’s change the world for the better.
